Week 3, January 2007

Greenstick

Ok, so a pretty slow week with the camera, but a bit of an eventful one on the family front.

My daughter Olivia, 4 years old and fearless, experienced yet another reminder that she can't escape the laws of gravity. While enjoying the freedom of a drop-in gymnastics class, she slipped from a rope to a bit of a hard landing, resulting in what's known in the medical world as "greenstick fracture". The name comes from the analogy of breaking a young, fresh tree branch. The broken branch snaps on one side (the outer side of the bend) while the inner side is bent and still in continuity. Because a child's bone is more pliable than that of an adult, this is a common injury amongst the young (and fearless). Olivia is in great spirits and will be sporting a somewhat "cute" little cast for 3 weeks.

On the technical side of the photograph, no I didn't get my own x-ray machine. Having my hands on the actual x-ray for only a short 5 minutes or so, I captured the image using my computer screen as makeshift lightbox, putting the x-ray over a completely white document on the screen and photographing it at high ISO.
